Who Pitched the Most Innings for the Mets?

Last week I looked at who pitched the most games for the Mets. That list was dominated by relief pitchers. Since they only throw one or two innings per appearance, they get into more games than starting pitchers. Today let’s see who has pitched the most innings for the Mets.

First up is the top 10 leaders for innings pitched in a single season.

Tom Seaver pitched the most innings in a Mets season. Seaver threw 290.2 innings in 1970. That same year he led the league with a 2.82 ERA and 283 strikeouts. Tom Seaver holds the top 5 spots for pitching the most innings in a single season for the Mets.

Seaver has 7 of the top 10 spots on the list. The guy never needed Tommy John surgery. It makes you wonder why more pitchers don’t use the drop-and-drive delivery style anymore. The other pitchers on the list, Gooden, Koosman, and Matlack, also used their legs more than today’s pitchers.

As a comparison, in the last three years, Jacob deGrom threw 201, 217, 204 innings. The MLB leader in 2019 was Justin Verlander who pitched 223 innings. But yeah, Seaver owns the list of most innings pitched. Which kind of makes the All-Time leader in innings pitched for the Mets a no-brainer.

Like Seaver, Koosman pitched for the Mets a total of 12 years. The lefty was a durable horse and a fine #2. Yet he still comes up 500 innings short of Tom Terrific. Gooden pitched for the Mets for 11 years, just 1 year less than Seaver. Yet he’s almost 900 innings behind. So far, over 6 years deGrom has thrown 1101.2 innings for the Mets. With any luck, he’ll break into the top 10 career innings pitched soon.
