Watch as Mets third baseman Robin Ventura has the look and mannerisms of Mike Piazza down to a T. This was during a second-inning rain delay of a Subway series game at Yankee Stadium back in June 2000. David Cone started for the Yanks.
It was also an ESPN Sunday Night Game that eventually got rained out. The game was made up as part of a two stadium doubleheader a month later. One of those games was when Roger Clemens beaned Piazza.
Waiting out the rain delay, Ventura put on a Piazza jersey and stuffed the shoulders with towels. He used eye-black to make Piazza’s FuManChu mustache. All the movements, like dragging his bat, holding his right hand up to ask for time and the big swing mimic Piazza perfectly. He even takes the first pitch, just like Mike. Players from both teams watched from the top step of their dugouts.
“Sheer boredom. Just a long rain delay on a long weekend. You sit in here and drive yourself crazy, as you can tell. Reliever John Franco talked me into it and Piazza was all right with it. I’ve been studying him for the last year-and-a-half.”Robin Ventura to the NY Post
