Meet The Mets FAQ

“Meet the Mets” isn’t just the team’s fight song; its lyrics are the thread that connects the original 1962 team to the current Mets. From those loveable losers playing in the ancient Polo Grounds to Shea Stadium’s Miracle Mets and on to today’s club at Citi Field.

The song has been featured on the TV shows Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Mad Men. Here’s a Twitter video from former Mets manager Bobby Valentine of him singing the Meet the Mets lyrics.

Who wrote Meet the Mets?

The music and lyrics of “Meet the Mets” were written by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz. Originally recorded by Glenn Osser’s orchestra, the feel-good jingle was meant to rally New York City behind the new team.

There’s some confusion about whether the Mets held a contest or went directly to Roberts. She was a well-known sports songwriter, having already written “It’s a Beautiful Day for a Ball Game” in 1960 for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

When was Meet the Mets written?

The music and lyrics of “Meet the Mets” were written in 1961 by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz. That’s one year before the team even played it’s first game in 1962. The master recording of the song was not made until March 1, 1963.

What are the Meet the Mets lyrics?

MEET THE METS,
MEET THE METS,
Step right up and greet the Mets!
Bring your kiddies,
bring your wife;
Guaranteed to have the time of your life
because the Mets are really sockin’ the ball; knocking those home runs over the wall!
East side,
West side,
everybody’s coming down
to meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town!
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they’re hollerin’ and cheerin’ and they’re jumpin’ in their seats,
where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are true to the orange and blue,
so hurry up and come on down –
’cause we’ve got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!
Give ’em a yell!
Give ’em a hand!
And let ’em know your rootin’ in the stand!
Come on and MEET THE METS,
MEET THE METS,
Step right up and greet the Mets!
Bring your kiddies,
bring your wife;
Guaranteed to have the time of your life
because the Mets are really sockin’ the ball; knocking those home runs over the wall!
East side,
West side,
everybody’s coming down
to meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town!
Of New York town!
